This watercolor painting depicts a jewel-like Green Blister Beetle that I observed while hiking in Grand Teton National Park. This species, Lytta stygica, is a member of the family Meloidae. This family of beetles are called blister beetles because they secrete a blistering agent known as cantharidin. Many blister beetles are brightly colored to announce their toxicity to potential predators. Cantharidin has been historically used as a poison and, alarmingly, an aphrodisiac. Feast on this pretty blister beetle with your eyes, but I wouldn't recommend eating it!
