A watercolor painting of an orange and iridescent black checkered beetle on a white background

Red-Blue Checkered Beetle | Grand Teton Insect Watercolor Art Print

$30.00

This watercolor painting depicts a whimsical orange and iridescent black checkered beetle that I spotted while hiking in the Grand Tetons.

The beetle's head was nestled down in a flower, and I couldn't clearly see its antennae. I originally thought it might be a burying beetle, which is a flesh eating beetle with orange tufts at the ends of its antennae that plays an important role as a decomposer.

After additional research and consultation with a biologist, I now believe it's actually a Red-blue checkered beetle, which doesn't have the orange antennae tufts. I had already painted them, so this guy is an amalgamation of a burying beetle and a checkered beetle, and it looks ready to party either way!

This colorful, unique insect is isolated against a clean white background, making it a vibrant, modern addition to your wall.
