The Common Collared Lizard, aka the Mountain Boomer (what a name!), is a gorgeous lizard that lives throughout the southwest. I often spot them hiking in Flume Canyon and on the trails in Lunch Loops. Collared lizards grow up to 8 - 15 inches long and can run up to 16 miles per hour. The males are brightly colored, featuring a bright yellow head, black neck banding, and a blue green body with yellow banding and a constellation of spots. The coloration of females is more subdued, and they undergo a noticeable color change during their breeding cycle. Females develop red spots on their neck and bodies when they are carrying eggs, and these red spots disappear after they are finished laying. See the red spot on this lizard's rear leg near the tail? She must be a female carrying eggs!
