Mountain Hedgehog | Colorado Mountain Cactus Watercolor Art Print

Mountain Hedgehog depicts a claret cup cactus blooming on a high alpine trail in Ouray, Colorado. 

When I spotted these bright red flowers amidst a granite boulder field, I was shocked to discover that claret cup cacti could grow at such a high elevation. It turns out that these cacti, also known as hedgehog cacti, are relatively common in Ouray—who knew? When I first saw this particular cactus, the buds were just about to open. My husband and I returned the next day to hike the steep trail once again so that we could witness the gorgeous red cactus flowers in full bloom amidst the snowy mountain peaks. It was worth it!
